Meedhupparu's Ayurvedic Guru

All Ayurveda treatments and programmes at Meedhupparu are carried out under the instructions and overall supervising of Dr. G.A.B Alawattegama, our Consultant Physician.

Dr. Alawattegama comes from a family of traditional Ayurveda practitioners, of which he represents the seventh successive generation of unbroken practice famed for curing eye diseases, catarrh and arthritis. He is also a qualified MD, counting several years of western-style medical practice in Sri Lanka and overseas. Dr. Alawattegama's interest in alternative medicine has also led him to study widely and qualify in the fields of acupuncture and homeopathy.

Dr. Pinnapaya Disawela Thalagune Walauwe Gnanarathne Abyekoon Bandara Alawattegama, the famous Digampitiya Veda Mahattaya, was born near Alawattegama, in southern Sri Lanka. Renowned as an expert in pulse diagnosis, he is the proprietor and Chairman of Abhaya Osuhala in Balapitiya and also serves as an Ayurvedic consultant to many hotels and institutions. His practice is now popular with patients from all parts of the world. He has served as a specialist at two major Ayurvedic hospitals in Sri Lanka and is well versed in both Western and Eastern medicinal methods including homeopathy and acupuncture.

Dr. Alawattegama is an Honorary Consultant of the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine, a pandit in Indigenous Medicine and a committee member of the Ministry's Ayurveda Research Committe until 2001. While holding several degrees in Ayurveda, Dr. Alwattegama has also studied western medicine at Lumamba University in the former USSR and Uppsala University in Sweden.

His qualifications include the following: M.D-Ph.D.-M.E. Hom, D.A.S.C. ( Sri Lanka ) D. A. Hons. ( Sri Lanka ), M.A.C.F. ( Sri Lanka ) D.A.C. ( Sri Lanka ), Sahashrabhisheka Vaidyasuri Sammanaya and Gaurawa Nama Sammuthika Upadhiya, Ayurveda Visharada Pandith. As District Co-ordinator - Health Services (Ayurveda) of the International Association Lions Clubs District 306 A over the past eight years, he has been involved in training for personal hygiene, healthy living and the cultivation of herbal plants and gardens.

Dr. Alawattegama has special treatments for psoriasis, arthritis, piles and diabetes. His wife Menik, also hailing from a family of Ayurvedic doctors from Dummalasooriya, and his three sons, Vipula, Dimuthu and Sandun are engaged in the same field and continue to be his strength and encouragement.
