The four objectives of life according to Ayurveda are Dharma (righteousness), Artha (economy), Kama (sensual pleasure), and Moksha (spiritual liberation): meaning, right living, economic prosperity, right way of enjoying life and spiritual discipline.

Ayurveda advises us that before consuming or using anything, it is vital to determine its effect on a person in the long run, have it in moderation and be fully aware of all aspects of it: in other words, awareness in everything you do, think and experience.

Ayurveda also advocates the middle path. According to Ayurveda, the three aspects that sustain life are food, sleep and sexual relations and these stimulants should never be misunderstood and properly controlled.

To be healthy is not only to be free of disease. It is the natural ability to resist and withstand disease and illness through a proper physical, mental, social and spiritual balance. It is a goal that has to be reached through individual and collective effort, through a method described in Ayurveda: positive lifestyle, where priority is given to prevention of illness.

A special branch of Ayurveda known as rasayana or rejuvenation therapy deals with the aspect of maintaining health.  Here are two recipes for simple Ayurvedic tonics that act as rasayana.

Eat 3 or 4 figs and drink 250ml warm milk in the morning. One or two teaspoonsful of honey may be added to the milk for sweetening. Soak the figs in water if they are dry. This excellent tonic and helps cure constipation and anemia.

Take equal quantities of unpeeled apples and grated carrot. Consume the mixture on an empty stomach in the morning. The dose can be up to 200g. Do not eat anything else for two hours. This mixture helps reduce extra fat, especially in women. For increasing weight the same mixture should be taken immediately after lunch.
